Castagniccia is a mountainous region located in the north-east of Corsica at an average altitude of 3,280ft (1,000m). Deprived of sea front, it is attached to the wooded reliefs of Monte San Petrone (5,797ft/1,767m), its highest point, and limited to the north and west by the Golo, the longest Corsican river. Its fertile land irrigated by several streams makes it a very green and heavily forested region which contrasts with the more arid parts of the island.
