Mapping the vegetation of Martinique

Guillaume Viscardi, director of the Conservatoire Botanique National de Martinique, has set himself the objective of updating the mapping of the island's vegetation in order to improve the knowledge and conservation situation of local species. For this, he surveys the land, as here on the slopes of Mount Pelée, to develop the database of the Conservatory by studying and describing the plants and their habitats. Many species (117) are indeed threatened today for lack of sufficient regeneration due to the destruction of their habitats such as the mesophilic forest sacrificed to the benefit of colonial cultures, the establishment of cities, or even because of climate change. This is particularly the case of the endemic species of the island's ridges, peaks, and summits, whose survival depends on the permanence of a layer of clouds that global warming tends to move higher and higher or causes to disappear.
