The town of Carcassonne offers two faces. From one side thrones the medieval city. Located on the right bank of the Aude river, it is the largest fortress in Europe. On the other side stands the Ville Basse (current city center) called the Bastide Saint Louis. The citadel welcomes more than 4 million visitors a year and can fully be roamed on foot. This history of France's treasure has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage for more than 20 years.
