Capturing the waters of the Montagne Noire

The Canal du Midi and its 149 miles (240 km) stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It was built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV. The complex allowed capturing the waters tapped on the Montagne Noire to supply the Canal du Midi on a regular and permanent basis. Many technical feats enrich the route of the canal and allow finding solutions to topographical obstacles.
