Après la floraison, les fleurs forment des petites boules blanches, fragiles, qui résultent de la transformation du capitule de fleur en un capitule sphérique de fruits. Chaque fruit sec, nommé akène, est composé d'une base contenant la graine prolongée en un long bec portant les soies étalées en parachute. C'est la transformation du calice qui donne ce parachute. Lorsque le temps est sec, les soies sont étalées et attendent le moindre souffle d'air pour se détacher et s'envoler.
