In French, the global term canoe-kayak designates for ease of language both paddle sports without trying to differentiate the two boats. Contrary to popular belief, these differences are not due to the number of occupants (only one in a kayak, two or more in a canoe) nor to the size of the boat. They rather come from the position of the paddler, the shape of the boat itself, and the type of paddle used.
