Navigating the Burgundy Canal from Joigny allows you to discover the Yonne at your own pace and in complete freedom. Opened in 1832, the canal first developed a freight transport activity (43.5 million tonnes transported in 1850) before this commercial activity was replaced by river tourism better suited to the small gauge (Freycinet) of this 150 miles (242km) long waterway. Today exclusively intended for pleasure boating, the Burgundy Canal is open from the end of March to the end of October and has become an important asset for tourism in Burgundy.
