The puff adder is the most common snake in South Africa and the one that causes the most deaths. Its camouflage is such that people often walk on it. Slow, it does not move when approached. Its venom is cytotoxic. It causes the swelling of the bitten limb, haemorrhage and nausea. Death results from the side effects of the bite.
