An ethnic group from the Indonesian province of West Papua, the Asmat mainly occupy the swamp forests of the south coast of the Asmat kabupaten, which is difficult to access other than by waterway in a motorized canoe. This 18,428sqmi (29,658km2) large area, populated by around 72,874 inhabitants living from fishing, hunting and agriculture, has Agats as its chief town.
