A wood lathe is a simple motor attached to a cast iron frame whose primary function is the rotation of the workpiece and not that of the tool which will shape it. It is therefore the hand of the turner - and not the machine - which holds the tool and directs the machining, from the roughing to the final polishing in a unique process in which he 'feels' the object gradually taking shape under his fingers.
