Le buis commun (Buxus sempervirens) est un arbuste à feuilles persistantes de la famille des Buxacées. Il peut atteindre une hauteur de 5 à 6 mètres. Il produit au printemps des fleurs de petite taille que les abeilles aiment visiter. Ses petits fruits au suc sucré apparaissent à l'automne et attire les fourmis, qui vont en disséminer les graines.
Le buis se prête aux tailles en topiaire. C'est la plante emblématique des jardins à la française.
Son ravageur est la pyrale du buis (chenille)
