Careless about respecting property rights, Frederick II did not hesitate to build his castles on land that did not belong to him. He did so with the construction of the Castrum Estuphin in 1147. The rocky promontory on which it was erected was part of an area granted to the monks of the Priory of Lièpvre by Charlemagne. Despite their protests, the fortress remained the property of the Hohenstaufen and changed its name in 1157 to become Königsburg (royal castle).
