Built of Lutetian limestone

The Basilica of Saint-Denis is built with Lutetian limestone stones. They are extracted, for the most part, in Paris and Carrières-sur-Seine, in the west of Paris (hence the name Lutetian limestone). They are easy to cut and very strong. They were already used in Roman times. A large number of cathedrals like Soisson, Reims or Sens are built with this stone as well as castles like Versailles or Vaux-le-Vicomte.
