Riquewihr is home to an old, densely populated center. It is surrounded by a rectangular wall from the end of the 13th century, over a perimeter around 3,150 ft (960 m). Around 1500, it was lined with a 65 ft (20 m) rampart farther west, south, and east. Two main axes cross the city, perpendicular to each other. They are similar to the Roman decumanus and cardo streets and are subdivided into numerous small alleys.
