In 1424, after having bought the Sedan seigneury, a German nobleman, Evrard II de La Marck, had a first castle built which included an older priory. This triangular castle was greatly expanded and reinforced by the descendants of Evrard II. Inherited through marriage by Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, the castle was the birthplace, in 1611, of the future Marshal Turenne. An independent principality for two centuries, the town was ceded by the last prince of Sedan, Frédéric-Maurice de La Tour d’Auvergne, to King Louis XIII of France in 1642.
