Built following the Treaty of the Pyrenees

Fort Libéria is a sentinel perched above the village of Villefranche-de-Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. The monument was built in 1681 by Vauban and then fortified under Napoleon III between 1850 and 1856. After the creation of a new border between France and Spain following the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, Catalonia was cut off in two, and the village of Villefranche became a strategic place. In order to provide Roussillon with an invulnerable defensive system, Vauban had his construction project accepted in 1679 and had Fort Libéria built two years later.
