In the 16th century, the habitations of Alsace's agricultural plains were still strongly marked by archaisms. However, fortified places such as Riquewihr already started to build their houses in height thanks to corner posts and corbels. Their roofs were with two steep slopes that prevented snow from accumulating. The house's ridge was frequently cut at both ends. Awnings sometimes protected the facades, and balconies emerged above the main floor.
