From 1834 to 1871, the Catholic missionaries led by Father Laval massively converted the inhabitants of the Gambier by establishing a theocracy in the archipelago. Notre Dame de Paix on Akamaru is one of the buildings erected under the guidance of the Picpus congregation by the inhabitants of the archipelago. According to a census of 1909, they had more than 116 churches built, hence their nickname of builder brothers.
