At the beginning of the 1960s, Schlumpf industries were prosperous. Fritz Schlumpf decided to let his brother run the business and devoted himself to his favorite hobby, collecting automobiles. Passionate about Bugatti, he was determined to bring Molsheim cars back to their homeland. Schlumpf went all over the world to buy them, regardless of the price, and fitted out an old factory to store them. Hundreds of candelabras, replicas of those on the Alexandre III bridge, illuminated the collection. In 1965, the Schlumpf brothers organized the only open house operation for a dozen personalities. Today, their car collection, visible at the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse, is the largest worldwide.
