This bird of the sub-Saharan savannahs has strong legs with claws to cling to the leather of mammals while removing their parasites. It feeds mainly on insects, larvae and blood, either through ticks or directly into the wounds of the mammals. By keeping wounds open, its action can then facilitate infections.
