Mist and fog come from the same phenomenon of suspension in the atmosphere of very small water droplets. The name difference is linked to the resulting visibility : by convention, meteorologists speak of ‘fog’ when the horizontal visibility is greater than 0.6 mile (one kilometer) and of ‘mist’ otherwise. In maritime jargon, the tendency is to use the term ‘mist’ regardless of the horizontal visibility.
