The lack of respect of the various preparatory stages for the Kanak slash-and-burns - in particular the preliminary land clearings - endangers the New Caledonian environment which is very threatened by the fires. This is why strict rules regulate this practice and ban wild uncontrolled burns or those carried out with polluting fuels. Well-applied burning techniques make it possible to perpetuate the exploitable plots of the territory.
