The standard of the Comtois breed is defined by the stud-book – the register of horses belonging to the same breed or breeding register - created in 1919. The criteria notably mention a straight and muscular neck, a large rump, a large and deep chest and a deep thigh. The same year some mountain breeders formed the Comtois horse breeding union (Syndicat d'Elevage du Cheval Comtois).
