Baby elephants are born after a gestation period of 22 months. From its birth, the elephant starts to suckle its mothers' udders, located between the front legs. It drinks about 10 liters of milk daily. It progressively learns to use its trunk, especially to feed. Weaning starts at about one year old, and the young elephant is totally indépendant beween 5 and 10 years old.
