The main materials used for braiding in the Caledonian archipelago are coconut leaves, pandanus leaves, lianas, rushes as well as aloe and bourao fibers. Each region chooses the plants according to the specificity of its local flora and develops horizontal, vertical, diagonal or spiral braiding techniques adapted to the plant and to the produced object.
