The women of the Kanak tribes continue to braid pandanus mats, especially for the large chieftaincies huts. Although clay has been replaced by cement, the huts floors are still covered with coconut mats on which are placed more precious mats made of pandanus leaves. The everyday objects braided by these women also often remain at the center of the customary ceremonial exchanges allowing the maintenance of this traditional activity.
