Militarily declassified in 1873 following the advent of shells, the citadel of Saint-Tropez remained the property of the French state from 1918 to 1992, before its purchase by the city of Saint-Tropez in 1993. It was listed as a Historical Monument in 1921 and 1995 and registered as a site in the inventory of Historical Monuments in 1990. The distinction between the two notions mainly lies with the influence of the heritage interest of the monument, the classification being at a national level, while the registration regards the regional scale.
