The clown then gradually became a more stereotypical and coded catch-all figure with colored clothes and hair and a red nose, used as a marketing tool by the entertainment and leisure industries. Numerous clowns adorn terracotta pots hidden in the narrow alleys of the village of Castellar in the Alpes-Maritimes department.
