Listed under the 1930 Act of Historical Monuments, the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel covers the significant ocher deposit of Rustrel. It extends over more than 247 acres (100 ha) and was exploited by four generations of ocher workers and peasants between 1871 and 1993. It was Father Pierre Martel who, while walking the trails of the municipality to draft a section of the GR6 hiking path, named the site Provençal Colorado by analogy with the American canyon it evokes but above all because Colorado means red in Provençal.
