Born from a royal privilege

Louis XIV's century was in great demand for lace to adorn cuffs, neckties, and head ornaments for women. In 1665, a nine-year royal privilege was granted for the creation of a lace factory in Alençon. The Museum of Fine Arts and Lace exhibits various lace stitches, such as a band with the motifs of a medieval wedding. It was created by Maison Lefébure, which had its headquarters in Bayeux and produced in Alençon and Argentan. The work displays embroideries of pages, horses, and women wearing veils and headdresses.
