The vervet monkey usually finds its water resources in its diet. It has little need of drinking. Instinctively, it is wary of stagnant water and is able to filter it to avoid the pathogenic genes contained in stagnant puddles. In the dry season, it digs holes in the sand of dry riverbeds by hand or with a stick to filter the water.
