Beyond the many uses of ocher of which archaeologists and geologists have found tangible traces, one can imagine that ocher also had a bodily use. Representations suggest that it served to adorn bodies for aesthetic purposes to distinguish them or, on the contrary, to express their belonging to a community. It is also thought that ocher was used for its disinfectant properties and as a protection against sun, drought, or insects the way it still is among the Himba populations of Namibia.
