In squamates (scale reptiles) like this Black Mamba, the scales are not individualized as in fish but are thickened areas of the epidermis. Their size, shape, texture and layout are very variable even within the same species. The number of rows of dorsal (widthwise) and ventral (lengthwise) scales are characteristic of the species.
