The 350,000-hectare Mosquitia rainforest in a remote region of northeastern Honduras has long remained intact due to its difficult access. It is the subject of observations from non-governmental organizations responsible for documenting its exceptional biodiversity which is said to include 246 species of butterflies and moths, 198 species of birds, 183 species of plants, 35 species of reptiles, 30 species of bats and 30 species of medium and large mammals, some of which have never been seen elsewhere.
