As part of the protection and conservation actions of the Niau kingfisher from 2014 to 2018, 27 wild cats were trapped in the most densely populated eastern part of the atoll, 10 female cats were sterilized, 77 new nests were identified and protected with coconut rings and informative panels, 9 pairs were followed for several months among which 6 reproductions were observed giving 5 juveniles. At the same time, farmers were regularly met and made aware of the habitat management, the use of fire and the preservation of the dead coconut palm tree trunks.
