A geological extension of the Maures Massif, Levant Island is the easternmost of Hyères Archipelago. Its 5.5 sqm territory (9 km²) is divided into two highly distinct spaces. A military part, consisting of a missile launch test center, occupies 90% of the island. The other sector, open to visitors, welcomes the private naturist area of Héliopolis, created in the interwar period by doctors Gaston and André Durville. Levant Island, which is home to a population of around one hundred inhabitants and respects the charter of the Port-Cros National Park, has become the number one naturist destination in France.
