Bergheim and the Jewish Community
0
0
In 1997, the Historical Society of Bergheim created an interactive place retracing the history of the witchcraft trials judged in the city between 1582 and 1683. The room on the ground floor presents the period and the historical setting in which were played out the 40 trials recorded in the archives. The Jewish community was, until the 20th century, one of the most important in Alsace. Around 1300, a synagogue was built in Bergheim. Despite the pogrom of 1349, it is the only one in Alsace that still stands on the site where it was first erected during the Middle Ages.
