The avifauna of New Caledonia includes many endemic species. The islands of Amedee and Koumac are home to colonies of several species of seabirds that come to nest there during the warm season. Nereis Terns (Sternula nereis exsul) measure up to 0,88 ft (27 cm) with a wingspan of 1,47 ft to 1,67 ft (45 to 51 cm). They see their legs and beak turn black after the breeding season. They are on the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List.
