The mangroves make up the majority of this forest subject to the influence of the tides. It looks like a swamp, but we now know that it is one of the most productive ecosystems. It protects the coasts and its intertwined roots retain soil sediments that would otherwise sufocate the corals. It is also the habitat of mud crabs and oysters which cling to the roots and provide a rich insect diet for thousands of birds.
