On the east coast, Hienghène would be the craddle of the Kanak soul. Nature is blazing there with its tropical forests, its mountains of black limestone. The Ouaième river has a curious sandbank which bars almost the whole of its mouth. It crosses the tribes of Haut-Coulna (Paana) and Pangou (Pagu). The foothills of Mont Panié (5 341 ft / 1,628 m) drop steeply into the water. The summits are covered with fragrant Niaoulis, the bark of which is still used to make huts. The cliffs overlooking the mouth of the Ouaième, the southern slope and the summit of Tonôô are sacred sites.
