Bearing tree and clearing
1
0
The traditional Korowai houses are built with sago wood, bark and leaves at the top of bearing trees, like this giant banyan, carefully selected for their height and robustness. Perched between 32 and 131ft (10-40m), they shelter a dozen people far from mosquitoes and other pests. The trees around them are cut down to provide the raw material needed for the construction and to form clearings allowing enemies to be seen and keeping away wild boars and snakes.
