Beams of glued laminated timber

From the terraces of the Louis Vuitton Foundation, the larch beams that support the glass roofs are clearly visible. They are made of glued laminated timber (GLT). This material, which is made of several wooden slats glued together in the direction of the fibres, is eight times stronger than concrete and, above all, much lighter (650 kg/m instead of 2.5 tonnes/m). Glued laminated timber is an effective material against fire. If the beams catch fire, the carbonisation will protect the wood core from the flames. This engineered wood can take a variety of shapes: straight, curved, or with variable inertia.
