Built after a religious siege

The citadel of Ménerbes was built after a siege of the village opposing Catholics and Huguenots between 1573 and 1578. From 1594 to 1791, it housed a garrison of Italian soldiers led by a governor appointed by the Pope to ensure the permanent protection of the village. The rather austere structure of the building is connected to the rampart of Ménerbe by two side towers, and a watchtower ends the circulation gallery that overhangs the street.
