Basque, Breton, or Norman ?

Normandy, the Basque Country, and Brittany lay claim to the creation of cider. The Basques argue that the Greeks consumed the phitarra, an alcohol made from apples in the region. Though pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela consumed it in the 12th century, there is no mention of this drink in the ancient texts. The Bretons did not plant apple trees until the 14th century, while the Normans made cider from 1082. The drink supplanted cervoise and wine from the middle of the 15th century.
