En 1890 comenzó la construcción del edificio que se encuentra hoy en pie. El arquitecto a cargo de la obra fue el francés Uldéric Courtois. En diciembre de 1910 fue inaugurada y bendecida la iglesia, si bien las torres aún no existían. En 1930 el Papa Pío XI le otorga el título de basílica menor. El templo se pudo finalizar recién en 1935.
