Barthelasse Island (center) is a river island of the Rhône located in the municipality of Avignon, of which it constitutes, together with Piot Island, one of the nine districts. Covering an area of 2,420 acres (980 ha), it has retained its historical agricultural character with 1,482 acres (600 ha) of crops. Ceded by Villeneuve-lez-Avignon to the City of the Popes in the 1850s, Barthelasse Island is formed by the gradual fusion of a string of Rhone islands ending with Piot Island to the south.
