The terms barquette and pointu refer to similar boats of which only the areas of use differ. The barquette sail in Marseille while Toulon is known for its pointu. The generic term pointu applies to many traditional wooden boats in southeastern France. It was imported by the French Navy that introduced it into the nautical vocabulary in the 19th century to distinguish the flat-stern boats of the military arsenal based in Toulon from the local pointed-shaped boats.
