The village of Banon appeared for the first time in texts and charters of the 11th century in the form of castrum Banonni or castrum banonum. Its name would be prior to the Gauls and linked to its position in height between the Albion plateau and the Montagne de Lure. It would be formed on the oronymic root ban, frequent in toponymy and meaning horn or point. The perched village of yesteryear, fortified in the 11th century, has now partially descended into the plain.
