The humpback whale usually has only one cub whose energy requirements are such that the mother could hardly feed two. From birth, the calf can swim, breathe on the surface, produce sounds and drink its mother's milk. It already reaches one-third of her length and one twentieth of her weight, proportions similar to the human newborn.
