Every year, between June and November, humpback whales spend winter in Polynesian waters to give birth. The young, which will measure 49ft (15m) and weigh 30 tons as adults, gain strength to face their first major journey towards the Antarctic once summer has arrived. From one ton at birth, the calf doubles its weight in 15 days thanks to its mother's very rich milk.
